Transformers Movies Are Way More Interesting When You See Optimus Prime As A Villain!
|That destruction behind you? That's all on you Optimus, it's all on you.|
"When you hear Optimus respond to Ironhide in the first movie "Ironhide, you know we don't harm humans , what is with you ?" Now you know why, it's because he wants to keep all able slaves alive."
It's general information that the Autobots are the heroic ones, the protagonists, the saviors, the "good guys". Well I'm here to tell you that you could be getting it all wrong.
"What are you talking about Bud? Megatron is the bad guy, it says so on the box."
"The Decepticons are evil, they want to kill people"
Are you sure about that?
For this article I'm looking at the Michael Bay Transformers Movies 1, 2, 3, 4.
We start this movie hearing about the "Allspark", how it is magical and brought life to Cybertron and eventually war. As the audience we believe what Optimus is saying in the intro. Even when he sees Sam , he tells him the following:
"Optimus Prime: We are here looking for the All Spark. And we must find it before Megatron.
Sam Witwicky: Mega-what?
[Prime projects a holographic view of Cybertron]
Optimus Prime: Our planet was once a powerful empire, peaceful and just, until we were betrayed by Megatron, leader of the Decepticons. All who defied them were destroyed. Our war finally consumed the planet, and the All Spark was lost to the stars. Megatron followed it to Earth, where Captain Witwicky found him...
Optimus Prime: Megatron crash-landed before he could retrieve the Cube.
Ratchet: If the Decepticons find the All Spark, they will use its power to transform Earth's machines and build a new army.
Optimus Prime: And the human race will be extinguished. Sam Witwicky, you hold the key to Earth's survival.
Mikaela: Please tell me that you have those glasses? "
Ok so first, Optimus never bothers to mention how the cube was lost to the stars. In the novel you know that it was shot into space, by the Autobots, so that the Decepticons couldn't have it. Wait what? So they're so afraid of losing the war, that they shoot their hope, their life into space, effectively killing the planet and their entire race with it. Who does that? I'll tell you who, sore losers. Selfish pricks. "if I can't have it, nobody can". I don't care if the Decepticons were "evil" or destroyed everything in their path. It's freaking war, if you can't win the war, you lose...step aside. Optimus basically took Cybertron's only natural resource...a right to every Cybertronian....and made it unreachable. All under the guise that Megatron will use it for evil. This isn't some time machine, or secret technology that if the bad guys got a hold of it they'd win the war. It's a resource, it was well known. It's like if USA and Russia were at war, and to avoid losing, the Russians end up blowing up the sun. That takes ego, a prime load of it.
Maybe this information is non canon as it's not in the films. That's ok, there is lots of evidence in just the films. Moving forward we're explicitly taking the lore presented in the movies.
When Optimus meets Sam he tells him "The Decepticons will use its power to transform Earth's machines and build a new army". Just think about that for second. Megatron was frozen presumably before the humans had any technology to turn into an army. Pretty much all the technology on Earth was taken from Megatron. So how could Megatron have wanted to use Earth as an army? He was simply there to get back the Allspark. He risked his life traveling throughout the stars to get this damned cube. The Decepticons were there continuing the mission and looking for their long lost leader. So what Optimus and Ratchet say are just fabrications to plant fear into this child and get him to get the glasses asap. Sam later says confidently to Sector 7 in Hoover Dam that Megatron is "pretty much the harbinger of death". Some bit of information he got from a hologram that Optimus showed him. A hologram that could have been fake as well.
When we examine Optimus closely, we find that he really doesn't care about human lives or any other Cybertronian lives at all. He was solely motivated to get the glasses so that he can clutch the Allspark. When Bumblebee got captured and Jazz explained to Prime that "we can't just leave him". While looking at the glasses in awe, Optimus says "he knew the risks, screw him....oh and there is no way to do it without harming the humans". We've seen Jazz magnetize guns, the glasses themselves point to where bumblebee was held. His own disregard for his soldier's lives is what concerns me. The robot that used his feet as a wall for head on collision with a speeding SUV. A robot who engages Megatron in a densely populated city. A robot who consistently involves children in his galactic decisions and planning.
I think Optimus is just as bad as Megatron. Megatron at least is up front about it. We find out in the third movie that Megatron intends to use 7 billion humans as slaves to rebuild Cybertron. The only place in the universe that offers the chance of rebuilding Cybertron is Earth. So the war really, is about this resource. Whoever gets to the humans first, gets to rebuild Cybertron.
You have to ask yourself this, what is Optimus's end game?
Is it to free load on Earth? Or wipe out all Decepticons? or is it to rebuild Cyberton?
I think his ultimate goal is to rebuild Cybertron. But he is playing a dangerous political game. He appeals to the humans by using Megatron as a scapegoat. Optimus considers the humans his. In fact, it is Optimus that wants to use Earth's technology as an army. But he can't because all of Earth's technology is Decepticon technology. So really he is planting himself on Earth to safegaurd humanity for when he needs them. That way he makes sure that the humans wipe out the Decepticons for him, and slowly he can work out the kinks of the Decepticon technology in human machinery. Eventually, he would approach the UN or whoever saying "hey humans, we defended you from bad guys, we shed blood, we stopped your sun from blowing up, even though if we had given the cube to them, they wouldn't seek the sun destroying machine....but it's time I called in all those favors, I need you to help me rebuild Cybertron."
Optimus has always known about space bridge technology. Optimus has withheld the amount of Autobots "taking refuge among the stars". Even director Miriam (third film), tells Optimus that he had no authority bringing Sentinel on Earth without consulting the humans. What did Optimus do? He didn't even care. She says "you have to clears customs first". He brings in more Autobots in the second film and continues to do so every single iteration.
Do you see what is going on?
Optimus is really molding Earth under his propaganda slogan "Freedom is the right of all sentient beings". He breaks that slogan when he threatens the Dinobots to "defend my family or die" right after he says "I offer you freedom". Optimus Prime is the real puppet master here. Everything he does is in the best interest of preserving the 7 billion workers, the incredible army he can build. He is like a business owner who is always present in his business, making sure his equipment is safe and running up to speed. He got his merry band of Autobots so loyal that they'll willingly "die for the guy". Hell with his royal "Prime" lineage , he got some old guy to rip out his freaking heart for him.
In Age of Extinction we really see him break his character and facade. Optimus did not expect humans to turn on him. When he finally confronts Stanley Tucci's character in the lab, the human reminds Optimus of the spoils of war. In Optimus's mind, Autobots are more precious than humans, he only flipped when he found out they're experimenting on Ratchet. But he didn't mind them collecting Decepticon corpses or developing railgun technology from Megatron. Why? Because he wanted exclusivity. He wanted power, but not single assuming power like Megatron...no he wanted complete multilayer deep state kind of power. He is saving the humans for later. Getting a strategic position in a galactic war. He knows the humans will tip the scale. That's why he is playing along. Acting like a hippie so they can trust him.
When you hear Optimus respond to Ironhide in the first movie "Ironhide, you know we don't harm humans , what is with you ?" Now you know why, it's because he wants to keep all able slaves alive.
If it's not the humans Optimus and Megatron are after, then it is the seed and the potential for Earth to create Transformium. It's just strategic. Did you really think Optimus survived a 4 million year war by being a hippie?
It's the only explanation for his rage when the humans are harmed in any way shape or form. He just loses it. It's because Optimus values each human for his ultimate plan. You can almost hear Optimus saying "don't touch the merchandise". Does he care about Ironhide? Nope, nothing, didn't even mention him. Does he care about Jazz? Nope, he just held him in his hands and said, "well he's gone but guess what we made new friends." As if trying to kiss ass to the humans. "look humans I don't care about my own soldiers who fought with me for the last 4 MILLION years! sure, take Bumblebee, I don't give a damn about him. But look, I colored myself like your American flag so you trust me."
Optimus is worse than Megatron. If anything Megatron could be considered the hero in this story. He is a tragic hero, on the losing side. Dealing with defeat, despair, and fighting for the people....his people.
|Look at how tired Megatron looks, at how he fought to bring back Cybertron. Megatron relaxed in DOTM when seeing Cybertron, he didn't want to conquer anything, he just wanted his home back. But because he is grey and has red eyes, he is evil.|
When we see Barricade meet Sam for the first time, he doesn't kill him, he just yells at him asking for the glasses. Blackout did what all military black operations do when they want to extract information, which is probably erase all trace of them being there. So he had to take out the soldiers and the base. Frenzy didn't go in guns blazing, he was stealth and simply wanted to find out where his leader was. And finally, the Decepticons, in the first movie were not hostile to Earth at all. It was because of what the Autobots do that the Decepticons decide to escalate and threaten the humans to get what they want. It's Optimus who continues to involve the humans and children in the war. So it's not logical for Optimus to get mad when the Decepticons attack the humans, he could have easily taken the war someplace else. At the end of every single movie, Optimus could pack his bags and leave the planet, just like he did in the 4th movie. Which to all of our surprise, he had freaking interstellar jetpacks all along. So this secretive Optimus , is hiding the fact that there are more Autobots, the thirteen primes and Earth being visited before, the space bridge technology, and the knights of Cybertron. All this and you want to tell me that this dude isn't scheming? That this master villain isn't also playing the war game. He is participating in decapitations, massive warfare with advanced weaponry , flight technology, interstellar travel, and he is a hero?
All I'm saying is that if you look at the movies from the perspective that Optimus is a villain, the story reveals itself without any effort. And the movies become watchable and pretty cool now.
I have brushed over some evidences here as clearly as I can. Who knows maybe I'll do a video recapping this and other points. It's not without reason that the movie Optimus is known as Murder Prime. It's not who he is underneath, but what he does that defines him ....right? Well so far, what Optimus has been doing is criminal in any court. He has to answer for killing Kelsey Grammar's character in TF4, but just like many criminals, he escapes the planet for fear of being prosecuted.
